commercial driver, Thompson Oromoro, has been brought before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing a carton containing 53 pieces of mobile phones valued at N1.2m.
The defendant was arraigned on Monday on one count of stealing before a presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Akokhia.
A police prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, told the court that one Oludare Oyewonyi, who lived in Benin, Edo State, had given the phones to Oromoro for delivery to a customer in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos State, but the defendant allegedly diverted them.
The suspect said he stopped on his way to Lagos to eat at a restaurant, but discovered that the phones had been stolen on getting back to where the car was parked.
The charge read, “That you, Thompson Oromoro, on January 3, 2017, at about 7pm at Iyana Ipaja, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal a carton containing 53 pieces of handsets valued at N1,209,500, property of one Oludare Oyewonyi, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 285(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.’’
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The magistrate, Akokhia, granted the accused bail in the sum of N300,00 and adjourned the case till July 11, 2017.
