The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested
one Obinna Echianu for the kidnap and murder of a taxi cab driver who was hired
to convey him and his accomplice to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport
Road, Abuja.
The command also paraded 25 other kidnap and robbery
suspects arrested at different locations in the FCT.
Parading the suspects on Tuesday in Abuja, the FCT
Commissioner of Police, Musa Kimo, explained that Echianu, 42, was arrested by
the command special anti-kidnapping squad for the murder of the unnamed taxi
operator.
He said the victim was murdered close to Gosa pedestrian
bridge, Airport Road after he was robbed of his phone, cash and Nissan Primeria
car which was driven away by the suspect to his house at Aba, Abia State.
Kimo said, “The suspect, who confessed to have personally
carried out the dastardly act that led to the death of the deceased cab
operator, said the criminal operation was perpetrated with the support of his
cohort who is now at large.
“Efforts have been intensified to arrest his cohort and the
suspect will be charged to court on conclusion of investigation.”
The CP said his command was able to arrest an armed robbery
gang through its collaboration with the Nigeria Army Guards Brigade which
intercepted the suspects.
He stated that five locally made pistols were recovered from
the suspects-John Peter, 30; Solomon Atabo, 33; Salisu Suleiman, 29; Olobo
Rilwan 25 and Emeka Umera, 34.
“The prime suspect, Peter, was arrested by the police after
he went into hiding on receipt of information that four members of his gang had
been arrested on March 6, 2017 by Nigerian Army, Guards Brigade before they
were subsequently transferred to the command for further investigation, “Kimo
added.
