What started as a minor argument between a young girl and a
woman who identified herself as the mother, has resulted in a terrible injury
suffered by the girl.
A middle-aged woman, Tricia Oterneghoro, has poured hot soup
on her 13-year-old daughter, allegedly for taking a nap in a neighbour’s room.
The young girl, identified as Joyce Emmanuel, sustained
burns on her chest as a result.
The incident happened in Benin, Edo State.
Joyce narrated that following an argument with her mother
the previous night, she decided to spend the night in a neighbour’s room as the
mother locked her out.
Things however became complicated the following morning when
her enraged mother punished her by pouring hot soup on the teenager.
Narrating her ordeal, Joyce explained that she wanted to go
out and take her bath on Monday night but her mother refused.
Joyce said she still went out to take her bath and her
mother locked her outside, which made her to sleep in her friend’s room.
She said she was shocked when her mother stormed into the
room the next day and poured hot soup on her.
“It was evening and I said I want to take my bath but my
mummy said no. I went out to take my bath and my mummy locked the door. After
knocking many times, I went to sleep in my friend’s house.
“In the morning, my mummy came and pour hot soup on my
body.”
In her response, Tricia explained that she did not intend to
pour the hot soup on her daughter, but that she was overpowered by her
daughter’s lack of repentance for her action.
Residents who rushed to administer first aid to the victim
poured invective on the victim’s mother, however.
Some alleged that they had cautioned her to stop maltreating
her daughter, but she refused to take their interventions.
A shocked elderly female neighbour said, “A woman with
correct sense will not do this to her daughter. I have warned her not to beat
the girl again. Her father called yesterday and the girl said she was
interested in going to nursing school.”
Tricia added that she had warned her neighbours to stop
meddling in her relationships with her daughter, saying that they would not
desist from doing so, hence her angry reaction.
As at press time, policemen from Oba Police Station have
taken Tricia into custody.
