The Kano State Government on Sunday conducted a mass wedding
for 1,520 divorcees and widows at the Kano Central mosque.
The mass wedding, sponsored by the state government was held
simultaneously in different mosques across the 44 local government areas of the
state.
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who attended the event at the
Government House Coronation Hall reminded the couples that marriage required
endurance, perseverance, patience and understanding.
He explained that the rationale behind the mass wedding was
to halt the rampant divorce cases in the state.
The state Commissioner for Information, Mallam Mohammad
Garba, who supervised the mass wedding in Bukure Local Government Area
disclosed that it was sponsored by the state government to marry off “the
city’s rising number of widowed and divorced community.”
He said, “The mass wedding was to ease the hardship being encountered
by the less-privileged in the society, who are in dire need of marriage, which
indicated the willingness of the state government to improve the quality of
lives of the citizenry.”
Garba gave N20,000 to each of the representatives of the
grooms as dowry while the state government provided the couples with free furniture and other essential household
items.
In his remark, the Hisbah Commander, Sheikh Aminu Daurawa,
said the couples underwent medical screening to determine their health status.
Daurawa reminded the couples that any of them contemplating
divorce must report to the Hisbah Board before approvals would be granted.
