18 passengers traveling from Effurun to Ozoro in Isoko North
Local Government Area of Delta State on Monday narrowly escaped death when the
bus they were traveling in was engulfed by fire a few minutes after setting out
on the journey.
Our correspondent learnt that the incident occurred at about
3pm along the busy PTI road in Uvwie Council Area of the state.
All passengers in the bus which is operated by the Delta
City Transport Scheme under the ministry of transport survived the incident.
It was learnt that majority of the passengers were students
of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro, and were returning back to school when
another motorist spotted the fire and immediately alerted the driver.
Efforts by sympathizers and passers-by to put off the fire
were unsuccessful as the bus got completely burnt.
A source said, “A passerby noticed the smoke emanating from
the moving bus and alerted the driver who immediately stopped as the passengers
scampered for safety. Immediately the travelers disembarked from the bus, it
went into flame. We could not save the situation.”
All passengers’ luggage were all burnt by the fire that
lasted for over 30 minutes.
The state commissioner for transport, Mr Vincent Uduaghan,
could not be reached for confirmation of the incident.
