The victim who was identified as, Chidi Opara, was reportedly studying Education Economics until his untimely death.

A source who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent on Thursday that the 24-year-old student was killed when he allegedly resisted the gunmen from snatching his mobile phone from him.

The source said Opara had called the suspected cultists’ bluff when they confronted him on Bishop Court Street within the school environment around 10 pm.

According to the source, the student had ran into the cultists who demanded for his mobile phone but he refused, prompting them to shoot him dead and flee the area immediately .

“The cultists quickly shot him dead, took the phone and fled from the area when he refused to heed to their demand.”

The death threw the residents of the area into panic as they scampered for safety.

When contacted, the public Relations officer of the University, Obi Njoku, said he had yet to be briefed on the death of the student. He however confirmed that there was a demonstration by the students on Wednesday around the Bishop Court area.

The Niger Delta As A Microcosm Of Nigeria | Eugene Abels | TEDxPortHarcourt

In this talk, Eugene Abels invites us to stop pointing fingers at governments, unite and reflect on our history and also, to change our thought patterns, attitudes and habits in order to create the community/nation we want.

A deliberate Change Agent and technocrat committed to international best practices who has in three decades traversed the Real, Banking and Public Sectors of the Nigerian Economy, Eugene Irefa Abels was born, bred and schooled in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He hails from two oil producing Communities, Nembe and Finima and believes that they are a microcosm of the Niger Delta Region.

An exponent of the need to exorcise our Colonial past from the souls of our public servants and elected officials, he believes the art of governance has been reduced to the single person pronoun ‘I’ whereas ‘we the people’ holds no relevance.
