The campus of Imo State University, Owerri, was on Wednesday
thrown into a mourning mood, when gunmen suspected to be students – cultists
shot dead a 300 level undergraduate of the institution.
The victim who was identified as, Chidi Opara, was
reportedly studying Education Economics until his untimely death.
A source who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent on
Thursday that the 24-year-old student was killed when he allegedly resisted the
gunmen from snatching his mobile phone from him.
The source said Opara had called the suspected cultists’
bluff when they confronted him on Bishop Court Street within the school
environment around 10 pm.
According to the source, the student had ran into the
cultists who demanded for his mobile phone but he refused, prompting them to
shoot him dead and flee the area immediately .
“The cultists quickly shot him dead, took the phone and fled
from the area when he refused to heed to their demand.”
The death threw the residents of the area into panic as they
scampered for safety.
When contacted, the public Relations officer of the
University, Obi Njoku, said he had yet to be briefed on the death of the
student. He however confirmed that there was a demonstration by the students on
Wednesday around the Bishop Court area.
