Fire razes filling station, 20 houses in Ekiti


Fire broke out from the Strive-Energy filling station in Old Garage, Ado Ekiti, on Sunday razing adjourning residential and commercial buildings in The fire, an eyewitness said, broke from a tanker that was discharging fuel at the station.

There has yet to be official information on the cause of the accident but the witness said the inferno started when a driver, who had queued for fuel, started his engine.

The number of casualties and worth of properties destroyed could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

But about 20 houses, 30 offices and shops were razed by the fire while no live was lost.

Governor Ayodele Fayose raced to the scene to assess the situation and also joined in rescue efforts.

Hoodlums took advantage of the confusion caused by the inferno to dispossess passers-by of their valuables.

They stole some wares which were being evacuated from some shops affected by the inferno.

The fire, which started around 4p.m, lasted for about three hours before the firefighters from the state fire service could put it out.
