President Buhari signs 2016 appropriation bill into law

Prominent Lagosians have been paying glowing tributes to the former Lagos Island Local Government Chairman and former Commissioner of Sports, Ademola Adeniji-Adele who died on Wednesday after brief illness. He was aged 60 years.

According to his son, Sultan, Prince Adenji Adele passed on at about 6 am Nigerian time in an Indian Hospital today.

Prince Adeniji-Adele served as a Deputy Gubernatorial candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party, before joining the All Progressives Congress where he remained as an active member before his death.

30 people injured as Etihad Airways hit turbulence

The flight from Abu Dhabi was about 45 minutes away from Jakarta on Wednesday when the turbulence hit. The plane, an Airbus A330-200, landed safely after the incident, but nine people were taken to hospital. The United Arab Emirates' national airline said the cabin luggage bins were damaged and passengers said oxygen masks were released during the shaking. In a statement, the airline said 22 people had been "treated by paramedics for minor injuries at the airport. Nine other passengers have been taken to a local hospital". Indonesian transport ministry spokesman Hemi Pamuraharjo said at least eight Indonesian passengers and a foreign flight attendant were hurt, with several suffering broken bones, the Associated Press news agency reports. Court rebuffs IGP’s application to withdraw murder case involving Amaechi’s loyalist

At the resumed hearing on Wednesday, the prosecution council had tendered a letter from the IGP Arasen asking for the withdrawal of the case for review of the charges.
In the letter, the IGP said the matter was not properly investigated before charging the suspect to court and therefore, should be withdrawn for the sake of justice.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate Israel Agbeso said the court cannot grant the request of the IGP following the report of the Department of Public Prosecution, DPP, dated 22nd of April 2016, which he said had indicated a case of murder established against the accused. The Chief Magistrate, however, struck out the murder charge before him against the accused, following the fact that he has no jurisdiction to hear it. Agbeso ordered that the defendant should be sent back to prison custody pending when the matter will be filed in a high court. A witness,  Mr. Abu Sule, told a Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that he collected $2.29m cash in Ghana-Must-Go’ bag from a former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, to help the former governor to buy a property in Asokoro, Abuja. Sule, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s second prosecution witness in Ohakim’s ongoing trial, said this while he was being cross-examined by the former governor’s lead counsel, Awa Kalu (SAN). The witness said he collected the $2.29m, which was an equivalent of N270m, from Ohakim in $100 bills at night sometimes in November 2008 and handed it over to the then owner of the property, Alhaji Isah Maidabino, the next day. The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has commended the Institute of Public Analysts of Nigeria, IPAN, for their role in healthcare provision, as their efforts in regulation of medical services, cosmetics, food, drugs and other products has in no small measure prevented health issues in the country. Police IG deploys homicide investigators to Rivers state over violence, killings

The Nigerian Police has dispatched a team of homicide personnel to Rivers State to carry-out thorough investigation into the killings in the state.
Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase disclosed this while answering questions from newsmen on his visit to Port Harcourt.

IGP Arase said the Command Headquarters was aware of the increasing violence in the state, adding that all was being done to quell the killings.

Navy arrests marine tanker over illegal oil bunkering

Operatives of the Nigerian Navy have arrested a Marine Tanker code-named ‘Mt Marina’ for suspected illegal bunkering activities,  reports. The Director of Information (DINFO), Commodore Christian Ezekobe, said in a statement on Tuesday that as at the time of the arrest on April 28, 2016, the vessel was laden with 100 metric tons (MT) of suspected illegal refined AGO. Ezekobe stated that MT Marina, which was arrested by a naval warship, Nigerian Navy Ship (NBS) Andoni, off River Sombreiro, was intercepted during a routine patrol of the area. In a related development, he said, a naval patrol team deployed by NNS Delta has arrested 13 persons suspected to be engaged in illegal oil bunkering, crude oil theft and piracy.

EFCC set to charge ex-police commissioner for fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, will on Thursday arraign a retired Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Sambo, before a Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja, on a one-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and obtaining money by false pretence to the tune of N10 million. Mr. Sambo, who connived with Nuhu Bello Dabai, allegedly duped the complainant, Abdul Malik Bello, Managing Director/ CEO, Ideal Sunbeam International Company Limited. HP claimed the N10 million was needed to defray both the survey and other preliminary expenses involved in the execution of a contract worth over N1billion purportedly awarded him by Zamfara State Governor, Abdul Aziz Abubakar Yari. The accused person was subsequently arrested and granted an administrative bail by the Commission on January 19, 2015. He, however, jumped the bail granted him on April 7, 2015. After playing hide-and-seek, he was eventually re-arrested on Wednesday, May 3, 2016.

PDP Cancels ward congress in three states

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) has cancelled Saturday’s ward congresses in three states. A statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Abubakar Mustapha, listed the states as Adamawa, Lagos and Osun. The statement also said that new congress committees in the affected state had been reconstituted accordingly after the dissolution of the previous ones. “Congresses will continue in these states from Friday May 6, 2016,” the statement added.

National Assembly to submit corrected 2016 Budjet to Presdent Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to receive the corrected version of the 2016 budget from the national assembly, Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed has said.
Ahmed, however, expressed hope that the document would be transmitted to the President either later on Wednesday or on Thursday. Tompolo blames oil firm for pipeline attack

A former Nig Delta militant leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo), has urged security agencies to investigate activities of oil companies in Niger Delta for the spate of attacks on pipelines and oil facilities in the region. Reacting to insinuations that he was behind the Niger Delta Avengers, a group which claimed responsibility for the attacks on key oil facilities, including the Forcados Crude Export line in Burutu, Delta State, Tompolo said oil servicing companies angling for the repair contracts, and not him, were responsible for the attacks.
