Dismissed US soldier nabbed in Owerri for defrauding visa seekers

Operatives of the Federal Special Anti - Robbery Squad in the Imo State Police Command have arrested one Garrick Slacks , a dismissed United States soldier , for allegedly defrauding Nigerians with fake promises to secure visas and other travelling documents to US .
Southern City News learnt on Sunday that the suspect , who was arrested on Saturday , was in the custody of the state Police Command in Owerri.
The police source , who did not want his name in print , said , “ He was a serial fraudster who had used his position as a foreigner to defraud Nigerians , who are desperate to travel abroad, especially to the US . ”
The source alleged that the dismissed soldier was in Nigeria on a special mission to defraud Nigerians , adding that he changed his location immediately money was paid to him .
“ He is a serial and sophisticated fraudster . He was arrested this afternoon ( Saturday ) while he was hurriedly leaving Owerri for Port Harcourt.

INEC budgets N1.8bn for possible presidential run-off

The Independent National Electoral Commission has budgeted the sum of N 1 . 8 bn for a possible Presidential run - off in 2019 .
A run - off or rerun is a second- round election that takes place after the first one fails to produce a winner.
According to Section 134 of the 1999 Constitution , a Presidential candidate can only be declared winner garnering the highest number of votes cast , and having received at least a quarter of the votes at each of at least two -thirds of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory .
The section reads in part , “ If no candidate satisfies the requirement , a second election will be held between the two leading candidates within seven days from the pronouncement of the result . ”
INEC , therefore , budgeted the sum of N 1 , 860 , 952 , 928 for election logistic expenses including movement , deployment and retrieval of men and materials in the event of a run - off .

Army recovers arms cache near Otuoke in Bayelsa

The Nigerian Army said on Sunday that its troops had recovered a large cache of arms along Agbura - Otuoke Road in the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State .
The troops , said to be on a raid on Sunday, recovered arms including two AK - 47 rifles and two G 3 rifles along the road that leads to Otuoke , the hometown of former President Goodluck Jonathan .

Our correspondent learnt that the troops , while conducting a search in the house of a suspected militant leader , Emmanuel Lawson , discovered the large quantity of arms and ammunition .
The Director , Army Public Relations , Brig - Gen . Texas Chukwu , who confirmed the arrest in a statement late on Sunday, said Lawson ’ s suspected accomplice , one Mrs . Ebikaboere Emmanuel, was arrested.
