Residents protest against strike in Auchi poly

Members of Auchi community in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo have appealed to striking unions of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi to call off their strike.

The residents made the plea during a peaceful protest to the secretariat of the unions on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the residents appealed to the unions to settle their disagreements with the management of the institution and call off the strike in the interest of the institution and the community.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics and Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics  embarked on an indefinite strike since February 6.

The unions are demanding the enrollment of the members of staff into “CONTISS 15 Migration Salary Structure for levels 11 downward and payment of promotion arrears, among others.”

Chairperson, Auchi Market Women Association, Mrs. Rabi Audu, said commercial activities had been paralysed in the community since the commencement of the unions’ strike.

“We are appealing to the unions to call off their strike so that the system can function normally,” she said.

A member of the community, Fred Ikhiodamhe, urged the unions to show understanding as commercial activities had been affected.

“We appeal to the workers, the unions in the polytechnic, to please call off the strike and let academic activities resume,” he said.

Addressing the group, the Vice Chairman of ASUP, Mr. Anthony Ohimai, said the unions were already engaging the management in discussion to resolve the issue.

“There is already a light in the tunnel. In the coming weeks, the school will be opened having appointed a new rector for the institution,” he said.

The Niger Delta As A Microcosm Of Nigeria | Eugene Abels | TEDxPortHarcourt

Despite being abundant in human and natural resources, violence and decline in development prevail in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. In this talk, Eugene Abels invites us to stop pointing fingers at governments, unite and reflect on our history and also, to change our thought patterns, attitudes and habits in order to create the community/nation we want.

A deliberate Change Agent and technocrat committed to international best practices who has in three decades traversed the Real, Banking and Public Sectors of the Nigerian Economy, Eugene Irefa Abels was born, bred and schooled in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He hails from two oil producing Communities, Nembe and Finima and believes that they are a microcosm of the Niger Delta Region.

An exponent of the need to exorcise our Colonial past from the souls of our public servants and elected officials, he believes the art of governance has been reduced to the single person pronoun ‘I’ whereas ‘we the people’ holds no relevance.
