Men of the Special Anti-robbery Squad of Ndiegoro Police
Division in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, have arrested a suspected
armed robber, Tochukwu Ukonu, believed to be terrorising Ogechi community in
military uniform.
It was gathered that Ukonu was arrested following a distress
call from residents of the area, saying that persons in military uniform were
robbing in the area.
A police source said the arrest of the suspect also led to
the arrest of one Ifeanyi Nwokorie of No.10 Enugu Street Aba.
The source added that the two suspects and others now at
large were suspected to be behind the robbery that led to the killing of one
Chinonso Nwagbara at Obohia by Ibadan Street, Aba, on the December 19, 2016.
They allegedly carried out in military uniform.
Confessing to the crime, Ukonu said he got the military
uniform from his friend whose brother-in-law is a soldier, confessing that he
was arrested while trying to snatch a cell phone from one of his victims.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Adeleye
Oyebade, has confirmed the arrest of the suspects, adding that the police have
intensified a manhunt for the fleeing suspects with a view to recovering their
weapons and ensuring their prosecution.
Oyebade added that the joint effort of the police and
members of vigilance group of Ogechi community led to the arrest of one
Tochukwu Ugwunsi (aka Cobra no dey sleep) who has been on the police wanted
list.
He said, “The suspect was arrested in the course of robbing
people of Ogechi community again, while two of his gang member identified as
Chidera and Emeka escaped. Manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing.”
The CP commended Abia residents for their cooperation with
the police in fighting criminal activities in the state, adding that information
from members of public helped his officers to be effective.
